1.Black Velvet
It may look like the stuff of witches brew, but this disarmingly simple combination of beer and bubbly wine is true to its name: rich, smooth, and lush. It’s also perfectly balanced, with the dark, chocolate notes of the stout (perfect for Halloween!) offset by the crisp fizz of the champagne.
3ounces stout beer, such as Guinness
3ounces dry sparkling wine
Pour stout into a large champagne flute. Slowly top with sparkling wine and stir gently.
2. Black Sun
The bittersweet orange edge of Cointreau liqueur adds citrus complexity to this tasty twist on the classic Cuba Libre. Add a spooky swizzle stick for a festive note or an orange garnish for a punch of seasonal color.
¾ounce Cointreau
1½ ounces dark rum
Coca-Cola
orange wedge, option
Fill a large collins or highball glass with ice cubes. Add Cointreau and rum. Top with the soda and stir gently. Garnish with an orange wedge, if desired.
3. El Diablo
Despite its name, the only thing devilish about this tequila cocktail is how easily you can slurp one down. Even traditional margarita drinkers will have to admit that the combination of sweet crème de cassis, earthy tequila, bright lime, and spicy ginger beer is a stroke of utter genius.
1½ounces tequila
½ounce crème de cassis
½ounce lime juice
ginger beer
2 lime wedges, for garnish
Add tequila, crème de cassis, and lime juice to an ice-filled cocktail shaker. Shake vigorously. Strain into an ice-filled old-fashioned glass and top with ginger beer. Garnish with a squeeze of lime and a lime wedge.
4.The Last Word
Electric green Chartreuse liqueur is the star of this crisp, Prohibition-era classic. While some of the ingredients may seem a bit obscure, trust us, they’re worth the investment: you’re going to want to make more of these.
¾ounce gin
¾ounce green Chartreuse
¾ounce maraschino liqueur
¾ounce lime juice
lime, for garnish
Add the gin, Chartreuse, maraschino, and lime juice to an ice-filled cocktail shaker. Shake vigorously. Strain into a coupe glass and garnish with lime.
5. Blood and Sand
This elegant cocktail is nearly a century old and takes its name not from gruesome ingredients, but a 1920s movie starring Rudolph Valentino. Though the components may seem a little odd, they blend seamlessly, and the warming scotch and sweet vermouth are a welcome nod to early autumn.
1ounce scotch
¾ ounce Cherry Heering
¾ounce sweet vermouth
¾ounce fresh orange juice
1 maraschino cherry, for garnish
Add the scotch, Cherry Heering, vermouth, and orange juice to an ice-filled cocktail shaker. Shake vigorously. Strain into a coupe glass. Garnish with a cherry.
6. Chartreuse Smash
This is one cocktail that will make you happy to drink your greens. Muddled mint and a bit of brown sugar take the medicinal edge off of the Chartreuse, resulting in a crisp, refreshing riff on the julep that is as delicious as it is eye-catching.
8 mint leaves, plus extra for garnish
1ounce lemon juice
2teaspoons brown sugar
2ounces green Chartreuse
Muddle the mint, lemon juice, and brown sugar at the bottom of a cocktail shaker. Add chartreuse and top with ice. Shake vigorously. Strain into a collins glass filled with crushed ice. Garnish with mint.
7. Caramel Apple Punch
This autumn punch calls for just four ingredients—apple cider, spiced rum, lemon juice, and a sliced apple (naturally) for garnish.
1quart apple cider, chilled
1 1/4cup spiced rum
2tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1 red apple, thinly sliced
In a large pitcher or punch bowl, combine the apple cider, rum, and lemon juice; chill for up to 12 hours. Serve over ice and garnish with the apple.
