    1.Black Velvet

It may look like the stuff of witches brew, but this disarmingly simple combination of beer and bubbly wine is true to its name: rich, smooth, and lush. It’s also perfectly balanced, with the dark, chocolate notes of the stout (perfect for Halloween!) offset by the crisp fizz of the champagne.

3ounces stout beer, such as Guinness
    3ounces dry sparkling wine

Pour stout into a large champagne flute. Slowly top with sparkling wine and stir gently.

    2. Black Sun

The bittersweet orange edge of Cointreau liqueur adds citrus complexity to this tasty twist on the classic Cuba Libre. Add a spooky swizzle stick for a festive note or an orange garnish for a punch of seasonal color.

    ¾ounce Cointreau
    1½ ounces dark rum
    Coca-Cola
    orange wedge, option

Fill a large collins or highball glass with ice cubes. Add Cointreau and rum. Top with the soda and stir gently. Garnish with an orange wedge, if desired.

    3. El Diablo

Despite its name, the only thing devilish about this tequila cocktail is how easily you can slurp one down. Even traditional margarita drinkers will have to admit that the combination of sweet crème de cassis, earthy tequila, bright lime, and spicy ginger beer is a stroke of utter genius.

    1½ounces tequila
    ½ounce crème de cassis
    ½ounce lime juice
    ginger beer
    2 lime wedges, for garnish

Add tequila, crème de cassis, and lime juice to an ice-filled cocktail shaker. Shake vigorously. Strain into an ice-filled old-fashioned glass and top with ginger beer. Garnish with a squeeze of lime and a lime wedge.

    4.The Last Word

Electric green Chartreuse liqueur is the star of this crisp, Prohibition-era classic. While some of the ingredients may seem a bit obscure, trust us, they’re worth the investment: you’re going to want to make more of these.

    ¾ounce gin
    ¾ounce green Chartreuse
    ¾ounce maraschino liqueur
    ¾ounce lime juice
    lime, for garnish

Add the gin, Chartreuse, maraschino, and lime juice to an ice-filled cocktail shaker. Shake vigorously. Strain into a coupe glass and garnish with lime.

    5. Blood and Sand

This elegant cocktail is nearly a century old and takes its name not from gruesome ingredients, but a 1920s movie starring Rudolph Valentino. Though the components may seem a little odd, they blend seamlessly, and the warming scotch and sweet vermouth are a welcome nod to early autumn.

    1ounce scotch
    ¾ ounce Cherry Heering
    ¾ounce sweet vermouth
    ¾ounce fresh orange juice
    1 maraschino cherry, for garnish

Add the scotch, Cherry Heering, vermouth, and orange juice to an ice-filled cocktail shaker. Shake vigorously. Strain into a coupe glass. Garnish with a cherry.

    6. Chartreuse Smash

This is one cocktail that will make you happy to drink your greens. Muddled mint and a bit of brown sugar take the medicinal edge off of the Chartreuse, resulting in a crisp, refreshing riff on the julep that is as delicious as it is eye-catching.

8 mint leaves, plus extra for garnish
    1ounce lemon juice
    2teaspoons brown sugar
    2ounces green Chartreuse

Muddle the mint, lemon juice, and brown sugar at the bottom of a cocktail shaker. Add chartreuse and top with ice. Shake vigorously. Strain into a collins glass filled with crushed ice. Garnish with mint.

    7. Caramel Apple Punch

This autumn punch calls for just four ingredients—apple cider, spiced rum, lemon juice, and a sliced apple (naturally) for garnish.

    1quart apple cider, chilled
    1 1/4cup spiced rum
    2tablespoons fresh lemon juice
    1 red apple, thinly sliced

In a large pitcher or punch bowl, combine the apple cider, rum, and lemon juice; chill for up to 12 hours. Serve over ice and garnish with the apple.

    8. Chocolate Malted Martini

Rich and creamy, this decadent cocktail—made with chocolate syrup and vodka—will bring out your dark side.

    3tablespoons vodka
    1tablespoon chocolate syrup
1tablespoon chocolate malt powder (such as Ovaltine)
    1tablespoons half and half
    2 dashes chocolate bitters (optional)

In a martini shaker filled with ice, combine the vodka, chocolate syrup, malt powder, half and half, and bitters. Shake vigorously, then strain into a glass.

    9. Pumpkin Martini

Stay away from those cloying pumpkin-flavored liqueurs—this drink uses pure pumpkin puree, with vodka for the kick.

    1tablespoon sugar
    1/4teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
    3tablespoons vodka
    2tablespoons half and half
    1tablespoon canned pure pumpkin puree
    1tablespoon maple syrup
    1/4teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Combine the sugar and ⅛ teaspoon of the pumpkin pie spice on a small plate. Dip the rim of a chilled martini glass in water, then dip in the sugar to coat.

In a martini shaker filled with ice, combine the vodka, half and half, pumpkin puree, maple syrup, vanilla extract, and the remaining ⅛ teaspoon of the pumpkin pie spice. Shake vigorously, then strain into the prepared glass.

    10. Vampire Punch

A generous dash of juicy pomegranate seeds adds a sweet-tart bite to every cup.

    1/4cup sugar
    1/2cup Campari
    1/2cup gin
    1/2cup fresh-squeezed orange juice
    3cups club soda, chilled
    1/2cup pomegranate seeds
    1 orange, thinly sliced

Combine the sugar and ¼ cup water in a small saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring often, until the sugar has completely dissolved, 1 to 2 minutes. Let it cool.

In a large pitcher or punch bowl, combine the Campari, gin, orange juice, and sugar syrup; chill for up to 12 hours. Just before serving, add the club soda, pomegranate seeds, and orange. Serve over ice.

    11. Deviled Margarita

A cayenne-spiced salt rim gives this easy margarita its heat.

    1/8teaspoon cayenne pepper
    kosher salt
1/4cup fresh lime juice, plus squeezed lime half
    3tablespoons tequila
    1tablespoon agave nectar

Combine the cayenne and 1 tablespoon salt on a small plate. Rub the rim of a glass with the cut lime, then dip in the cayenne salt to coat.

In a martini shaker filled with ice, combine the lime juice, tequila, and agave. Shake vigorously, then strain into the prepared glass. Garnish with the lime half.

    12. Dark and Spooky

Use ginger beer—not ginger ale—and dark rum for the deepest, most intense flavor.

    1/2cup ginger beer
2teaspoons fresh lime juice, plus 1 lime wedge
    3tablespoons dark rum
    1 gummy candy bat

Fill a glass with ice and pour in the ginger beer and lime juice. To float the rum onto the ginger beer, turn a metal spoon upside down, hold just above the ginger beer, and slowly pour the rum over the back of the spoon. Garnish with the lime wedge and the gummy bat on a swizzle stick or wooden skewer.

    13. Bloody Maria

Shake up your usual brunchtime beverage with a shot of tequila instead of vodka.

    3/4cup tomato juice
    3tablespoons tequila
3tablespoons fresh lime juice, plus 1 lime wedge
1teaspoon chipotle hot sauce or regular hot sauce
    1/4teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
    1/4teaspoon black pepper
    pinch celery salt (optional)
    1 pimento-stuffed olive
    1 cornichon

In a liquid measuring cup or medium bowl, combine the tomato juice, tequila, lime juice, hot sauce, Worcestershire, and celery salt if using; stir well.

Serve over ice. Thread the lime wedge, olives, and cornichon through a toothpick and use as garnish.
