Retrieving Data on Death HD

I have a external hard drive, Maxtor One Touch 300 GB. I have been using it for awhile and last night when I turn it back ON, to back up. I cannot access to my backup data, instead, it asked me for formatted it !@#$%$#@

is there any way/ solfware which will help me to retrieve the data on the external hard drive???

There could be that your HD is dead .. What kind of system is your HD formating in ?? NTFS or FAT32 ???
